Do we really need standards for Balcony PV?
Balcony PV systems are compact solar panels that plug into standard outlets, letting homes (even apartments!) generate clean energy. Perfect for tenants and small spaces!

The German DKE has released a draft standard (DIN VDE V 0126-95) for plug-in solar devices, setting safety and technical requirements for manufacturers. Final standard expected Q3 2025 as reported on PV-Magazine.
But the international IEC draft (60364-7-751) could complicate things by banning power generation units from connecting to existing circuits, citing safety risks. This could make balcony solar setups costlier and less accessible, especially for tenants and lower-income households.
DKE is pushing back, arguing that IEC standards aren’t binding and can be adapted nationally. Industry voices like Zendure’s CEO Bryan Liu also criticize the IEC draft, warning it could slow the energy transition. Liu calls for a revision to support an inclusive, citizen-driven energy system.
